Absolutely brilliant the nurses doctors and other staff made us welcome and at ease on both occasions that Evie has been in for surgery, every 1 of the staff members were always happy and smiling and immediately on hand to help with any problems we had. The care for our daughter before and after surgery was outstanding and we are grateful that wards like Ocean ward exist. Many thanks it certainly helped us get through a difficult and emotional time.

Our newborn son spent 3 weeks on E1 after his heart surgery and short spell in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. This became our home for the time and we felt sad leaving in the end. The ward and staff are so hospitable and dealt comfortably with every situation be good or bad that developed. It should not be closed for any reason, it was bad enough having to drive in from Portsmouth only 26 miles away everyday sometimes twice a day. It pains to think about those families who live further. With the increase in population you'd think we'd need more hospitals with wards like this, not less.

Our 7 week old daughter was discharged last month after spending 2 week on Ocean ward and a little stay in PICU after her operation. I would like to thank all of the staff from the bottom of my heart for the first class treatment and care they gave during this time. The ward facilities are fantastic but most importantly the staff have such dedication and their love of their jobs is so aparent, they helped to make the most difficult times in our lives more bearable. We cannot thank you enough x

I really think that the standard in terms of care on the Ocean Ward is outstanding. My son loves the ward and hates leaving it. Whenever there is a problem with his health and I need some reassurance with regards to my son's condition the staff are only to willing to help. Thank you Ocean Ward, I don't know what I'd do without you. xxxxxx

Our daughter Katie was recently transferred to Ocean Ward for surgery. (We are normally under the care of Oxford). Uncertainty brings additional worry, but we found the Ward, Staff & Care in Ocean Ward (& the rest of Southampton Hospital) to be very good. Each member of staff was understanding & willing to explain what was going on and any implications that could follow. This was the case from Surgeons, Consultants, Sister's & nursing staff. The care & attention we received was excellent.
We would like to express our gratitude to all the staff that cared for Katie during her stay.

We had excellent treatment from the time of arrival until discharge. The medical staff worked seamlessly together. The nursing staff were supportive , informative and always willing to help. I can't imagine we could have had better treatment anywhere else.

I think it will be a great shame if the ward were to close , there is so many highly qualified and very dedicated staff , my daughter being one of them and I know how hard she has worked to get to where she is and is absolutely dedicated to her job and would be absolutely devastated if the ward were to close. She really loves her job and why should they change things that work well. I know several people locally who depend on the ward and they would be very distraught if the ward were to close. its absolutely criminal.

It's unthinkable that Ocean Ward may be up for closure - there is absolutley no way this should ever happen! My son spend time here on Ocean ward when he was only a month old and the care and attention he received no doubt saved his life. The areas this ward covers, including the Isle of Wight ,is vast and people from many miles around need this facility. What can we do to put pressure on the "decision makers" so they don't close this ward?? Any suggestions???

From: Sophie     Date: 23 March 2010

In 2003 i was at Ocean ward to have open heart surgery. My mum stayed with me and took pictures while i was in there to remember it. I always look back at them and remember how nice i was. All the nurses staff were very friendly and helpful. I'm now 14, and it is only today i found this website. I have loked at the gallery and smiled. All of the children look very happy, just like i was.

Such a lovely place to be. I have been to other wards, but harldy any of them match up to this. :) x

Our daughter has spent a great deal of time in Ocean ward during her 12 years, due to her Ebsteins anomoly and the stays on the ward have varied from a couple of days to weeks. It is, without doubt, the nicest, most welcoming of wards any child and parent could wish for. The staff, from the senior consultants to the nurses, play assistants, cleaners etc are consumate professionals, yet kind, understanding and do everything they can to make the stay as comfortable (and very often great fun!) for the children. Our daughter loves being there, whenever she`s had reason to be,and as parents we have only the highest regard for all the staff and what they do for all the children and anxious parents.

For anyone who`s not had the pleasure of experiencing the level of care of Ocean ward (albeit a scary thing when your child has a heart condition!) and has that prospect in the offing, it is THE best place your child could ever be for their care.

People are too eager to knock the NHS. Those of us who`ve spent time on E1 Ocean ward, are only too proud and thankful for the amazing people who work there and who`s dedication and kindness, make a difficult & often stressfull time, as pleasant as possible. Thankyou Ocean ward !

My son had corrective heart surgery on Friday 13th September 2002. The care we had was excellent from Mr Haw and all the wonderful team. It is beyond belief that the closure of this magnificent unit should even be contemplated. Typical of this govenment we would say. My son will require further surgery at some point, although thankfully, he has remained in excellent health since his op. We hope and pray this unitwill still be here, it will be such a long way to london or Bristol. Let us all hope sense prevails and the unit will stay open.

I recently have read the article from The News (Portsmouth) and was shocked to hear that the NHS are proposing to reduce the existing centres, which could mean Southampton in one of them. This would be absolutely dreadful for so many people. My daughter has been seen at Ocean Ward and at Q.A and I cannot praise them highly enough. They are amazingly efficent and thorough and extremely helpful in everyway. It would be so awful if people in this area had to travel as far as London for treatment, when they have enough to cope with and they have this wonderful team in Southampton.

I hope this doesn't materialise.

I hear that the government is trying to close 'small' paediatric heart centres, such as at Southampton General.

The alternative for families like mine would be Bristol or London. We have all so appreciated being able to go to a relatively local hospital. Our daughter was 'blue-lighted' from Poole hospital straight to PICU at southampton. The added distance to Bristol or London could have been detrimental to her health. She was in PICU and on Ocean Ward for 3 weeks, and then needed frequent follow up on the ward and in clinic. The upheaval and added stress and upset for all of us, including her sister, would have made the situation even worse. to say nothing of the added financial burden and the time needed for travelling. This hospital was familiar to us as we had already spent 8 months there for her chemotherapy. The paediatric cardiologists and paediatric oncologists were able to treat her together with the best of communication links - face to face. Heart patients often have other health issues and the continuity in terms of best medical care as well as the security of a known environment close to home is good for their treatment. For follow up appointments, we are able to arrange to see her cardiologist and oncologist on the same day.

As a teenager, our daughter was very low following months of chemotherapy and then mutiple organ failure caused by cardiomyopathy. the fact that we were close enought to home for friends and family to visit was a significant plus factor. Of course, if we had any worries at all about the kind of treatment she received at Southampton, we would go to a 'better' place without question - we went to Stanmore for her orthopaedic surgery. But we have been utterly and completely secure and never doubted that she was receiving the most excellent care and expertise from Joseph Vettukkatill and his team and colleagues.

Please can you use this to help argue the case for not closing the paediatric facility at Southampton General. Can I also suggest that you ask people to write to their MPs at the House of Commons, London SW1, as it seems to me this is a cynical attempt by government to save money so that they can spend it on one of their more ridiculous targets.

I have been informed recently about the possible closure of your unit. My son has his surgery done on Ocean Ward 3 years ago and has regular check ups for this at Southampton. Please can you send me details of how I can oppose this as am keen to take part in campaigning to keep the unit open. We did a fundaising event 3 years ago and would like to continue our support in keeping the unit open. Many Thanks

Hiya,

My son had surgery and has check ups at Southampton General, please could you tell me how I could help to stop this service being shut down. As I saw something along those lines in the news paper.
